Alley Pond Park
Take Union Turnpike to Springfield Boulevard, turn north, drive
to 76 Avenue, turn right. Parking lot is on your left. To reach
Union Turnpike:
Heading west on Grand Central Parkway, take exit 23 then drive
past the Cross Island Parkway exits to Union Turnpike and turn right.
Then follow instructions above.
Heading south on Cross Island Parkway, take exit to Grand Central
Parkway, then exit at Union Turnpike and turn right. Then follow
first instructions above.
Heading east on Grand Central Parkway, exit at Union Turnpike and
turn left. Then follow first instructions above.
Heading north on Cross Island Parkway, exit at Union Turnpike and
turn left at the traffic light. Then follow first instructions above.
Avalon at Stony Brook
Take Northern State Parkway east to its end, then merge into Route
454. Bear left into Route 347 and drive to Stony Brook Road (2.5
miles). Turn left and follow to its merge to the right into Route
25A (Main Street). Park at the Grist Mill (on the left side past
the pond).
Bailey Arboretum
Take route 25A to Wolver Hollow Road (traffic light and police
station). Turn north until road ends, then right on Chicken Valley
Road. Stay on this road until you pass the railroad bridge. Just
ahead, turn right into Bayville Road. Arboretum is on your right.
Basherkill Swamp
Take New York Thruway then route 17 to Wurtsboro exit 113. Turn
left and drive to Haven Road. Turn left and follow road across bridge.
Look for a narrow road on the left side, leading to the parking
area.
Bayard Cutting Arboretum
Take Southern State Parkway east to exit 45 (South Country Road).
Drive east to entrance at right.
Betty Allen Twin Ponds Park
Head to Huntington on Route 110 and turn east on Rote 25A (Northern
Boulevard). Drive to Centerport. Entrance is on your right; watch
for sign. Park on opposite side of streeet.
Bronx Botanical Garden
From Whitestone Bridge, take Hutchinson River Parkway to Pelham
Bay Park/ Parkway exit, or from Throgs Neck Bridge, bear right and
take Throgs Neck Expressway/Bruckner Expressway to Pelham Bay Park
exit 1. Head west on Pelham Bay Parkway and after the park on your
right, bear right into Southern Boulevard. Entrance is on your right.
Caleb Smith State Park (Suffolk County)
Take Northern State Parkway or I-495 to the Sunken Meadow Parkway.
Head north to exit SM3, then east on Jericho Turnpike. Look for
the park on your left after driving approx. 2 miles. Park is closed
Mondays, in winter also Tuesdays. R
Caumsett State Park (Lloyd Neck)
From route 25A in Huntington, turn north at West Neck Road. Continue
over causeway to park entrance.
From I-495 going east, exit at Woodbury Road and bear right. Turn
right at the next traffic light into Woodbury Road. Stay on Woodbury
Road until you cross the county line, then bear right with Woodbury
Road. Near the top of the hill, Woodbury Road turns half-left toward
Huntington. Continue to stay on this road. It turns into West Neck
Road. Continue over causeway to park entrance.
Chelsea Mansion (Nassau County)
Drive east on route 25A. At the second traffic light past route
107, look for the entrance sign on the right side, near the traffic
light (Mill River Road). When gate is closed, may be accessible
from the Muttontown Preserve. Not always open to the public. R
Coffin Woods (Nassau County)
Take route 25A to Wolverhollow Road (traffic light and police station).
Turn north until the road ends, then right on Chicken Valley Road.
Stay on this road until the railroad overpass comes into view. Just
at the overpass, turn left into the game warden’s driveway.
Croton Point (Westchester County)
Take the Saw Mill River or Sprain Brook Parkway to Hawthorne, then
follow Route 100 into Route 9A. Stay on Route 1A to Croton-on-Hudson,
then turn west across the bridge leading to the Point. Alternate
scenic route: Head north on the Taconic Parkway to Route 129 (exit
after crossing reservoir bridge). Turn left to end of road, then
right leading into Croton-on-Hudson. Turn left into Route 1 to next
exit, the turn right to cross the bridge to the Point.
Cunningham Park
Take Grand Central Parkway to Francis Lewis Boulevard north. Turn
left at Union Turnpike. Turn left into the Tennis Court parking
lot immediately on your left.
Delaware River (New Jersey)
Take I-80 west to the Visitor Center at the Delaware Watergap.
Meet the club there and then proceed along Old Mine Road which follows
north along the river.
Doodletown
Take I-87 north across the Tappan Zee Bridge to Bear Mountain Parkway,
then head north on it to the exit for route 6 East. Follow that
to the traffic circle at the Bear Mountain Bridge. Bear right into
route 9W south, drive past the traffic light, down the winding hill
to the intersection of a road coming in on the right side. Park
immediately past that intersection. A narrow, winding uphill trail
leads to Doodletown.
Forest Park
From Grand Central Parkway going west, take Interborough Parkway
to the Metropolitan Avenue exit. Turn left and park on the right
side of Metropolitan Avenue or along Park Lane South which crosses
several blocks ahead. Watch for parking restrictions. Club meets
at the corner of Metropolitan Avenue and Park Lane South.
Fort Tilden
From Southern State Parkway, take Flatbush Avenue South exit 11
(Marine Parkway Bridge) across toll bridge. Take Breezy Point exit
and turn left into the entrance just past the traffic light. The
Administration Building is to your left at the end of the road.
For hawk-watch at Fort Tilden, drive past Administration Building
to end of road, turn left and drive along ocean to far parking lot.
This lot is only available without permit after September 15.
Garvies Point Preserve
From I-495, exit 39N, go 5.2 miles north on Glen Cove Road. Bear
left at the fork and continue to end of road (at the firehouse).
Turn right for 1/4 mile, then left on Cottage Row which curves left.
Bear right into Landing Road. At the blinking light one mile ahead,
turn left into Germaine Street. At its end, turn right and immediately
left into Barry Drive, which leads to the Preserve.
Great Swamp, NJ
Take I-80 to I-287 South to exit 33 (Harter Road). Turn left on
Route 202 then left on Sandspring Road. Turn right on Hill Road/
Blue Mill Road/Lee’s Hill Road, then left on Long Hill Road.
Hempstead Lake State Park
Take Southern State Parkway to exit 18. Entrance fee
in season.
Hoffman Center
Take route 25A east to Wolver Hollow Road (police station at intersection).
Continue on route 25A for one mile and look for sign on south side
of the road. Not open to public. Pre-arranged visits by contacting
Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary.
Hofstra University Arboretum
From Meadowbrook Parkway, go west on Hempstead Turnpike, past first
overpass. Turn left on California Avenue (after Dunkin Dougnuts),
then left again after one block into Belmont Place. Park on the
right side of the street in the parking lot (after two houses) and
meet there. If no room, use the parking lot farther down the street
on the left.
Hook Mountain (Rockland County)
Take Interstate I-87 north from New York across Tappan Zee Bridge.
Take exit 11 and go north on route 9W. After passing the traffic
light at Herold Road, climb the hill ahead and park in the parking
area on the right at the top of the hill. Walk back along road several
hundred feet and enter the blue-dot trail on the east side of the
road. After a moderate climb, this trail leads to the top of the
mountain.
Hoyt Farms Park and Preserve
Take the Long Island Expressway to Exit 54 westbound (County Road
67). Stay on Motor Parkway for approximately one mile, then turn
right at the Harned Road traffic light. At the next traffic light,
turn right into New Highway and proceed approximately one mile to
a traffic light. The pak entrance is on the right.
Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge
Take the Belt Parkway to Cross Bay Boulevard south,
exit 17S, then head south. After crossing the bridge,
look for parking lot entrance on the right side 1 1/4
mile ahead at the traffic light.
Jones Beach
From Northern State Parkway, take Meadowbrook Parkway south to
Jones Beach.
--For West End 2, turn to right as you enter the beach area, follow
signs. Birders meet at northwest corner of parking lot.
--For Coast Guard Station, follow signs to West End 2, then turn
right at Coast Guard Station. A small parking area is reached by
making a right turn.
--For Parking Field 4, follow signs. Birders meet at the northeast
corner of the parking field.
Kissena Park (Queens)
Take I-495 west to Kissena Boulevard and head north. Turn right
on Rose Avenue and park two blocks ahead. Meet at the corner of
Parsons Boulevard and Rose Avenue.
Leed's Pond Preserve
Take route 25A to Plandome Road in Manhasset. Head north through
town and bear left when road divides. Entrance is on your right.
Marine Nature Study Area (Oceanside)
Take Southern State Parkway to exit 20S (Grand Avenue-Baldwin).
Pass Sunrise Highway, then turn right on Atlantic Avenue. Turn left
on Waukena Avenue and start looking for signs to the nature center.
Turn left on Park Avenue, then left on Golf Drive to Slice Drive.
Massapequa Preserve (Nassau County)
Take Northern State Parkway to Wantagh Parkway and exit at Merrick
Road. Go through Seaford for about 2 1/2 miles to Ocean Avenue (which
runs north just ahead of the lake). Turn left and park about one
block in.
Montauk Point State Park
Take I-495 east to exit 70. Turn right and go to end of road, then
turn left into route 27. Follow along route 27 to end of road. On
return trip on route 27, poorly marked exit 62 is used to return
to I-495. Parking Fee.
Muttontown Preserve
Take route 25A east. Just before the intersection with route 106,
opposite Howard Johnson's, turn right on Muttontown Lane. Continue
straight ahead to the preserve.
Nassau County Museum of Art (Roslyn, Nassau County)
From Northern State Parkway (exit 28) or I-495 (exit 37), take
Mineola Avenue north to route 25A. Turn right and drive across viaduct.
On top of the hill, make a left turn into the museum area. Closed
Mondays. R
Norman J. Levy Park
Take Meadowbrook Parkway to Merrick Road and drive east. Turn right
immediately after passing parkway (Sanitation Dep’t entrance).
Overpeck Park
Take I-95 across George Washington Bridge and turn-off to New Jersey
Turnpike. Take the first exit (Route 46, Ridgefield Park) to end
of street and turn left. Drive two blocks to left turn for route
46 East. After making the turn, bear left, cross over I-95 and turn
left. Drive to end. Caution for exit from Overpeck Park. To go east,
follow entrance sign for I-95. To go west, drive forward to route
46 and turn east.
Pelham Bay Park (Bronx)
Take the Hutchinson River Parkway to Orchard Beach exit, then follow
the road to its end. Turn left into the Orchard Beach parking area.

Planting Field Arboretum.
Take route 25A to Wolverhollow Road (traffic light and police station).
Turn north until the road ends, then right on Chicken Valley Road.
Pass the large gate of Planting Fields, and turn right at the next
road, Planting Fields Road, which leads to the Arboretum. Parking
Fee.
Point Lookout
Take Meadowbrook Parkway south to Long Beach exit and follow to
traffic light. Turn left and park near end of street. Legal parking
may be limited.
Alternately, beach is reached by driving straight ahead at the traffic
light.
Prospect Park (Brooklyn)
Take Jackie Robinson Parkway to Bushwick Avenue, then turn left
into Eastern Parkway. Drive around Grand Army Plaza and park. R
Robert Moses State Park (Fire Island)
From Northern State Parkway, take Meadowbrook Parkway or Wantagh
Parkway south to Jones Beach. Then head east until you reach the
right turn for Fire Island. Turn right and cross the bridge into
the park. Club meets at east end of Field 2.
Hawk Watch is located east of Field 5.
Sands Point Preserve
Take I-495 to exit 36, then north on Searingtown Road which turns
into Port Washington Boulevard (route 101). Continue past Port Washington,
then watch for entrance 1 1/2 miles ahead on your right. Permission
required; call 883-1612. Parking fee.
Shu Swamp (Mill Neck)
Take route 25A to Wolverhollow Road (traffic light and police station).
Turn north until the road ends, then right on Chicken Valley Road.
Pass Planting Fields, and turn right at the blinking light. Drive
along the pond at your left, turning left, and continue until you
reach the sanctuary parking lot on the left side, just before LIRR
overpass. No street parking. Closed Fridays.
Stehli Beach (Bayville)
From route 25, 25A, I-495, or Northern State Parkway, take route
106 north into Oyster Bay. Make a left turn at Lexington Avenue
(Berry Hill Road), then left when it ends. Follow this road along
the bay into Bayville. Turn left at the traffic light at the end
of the road. Drive through Bayville. Just before the road turns
sharply to the left, turn right into the beach parking lot. Residents
only in summer.
Stillwell Woods
Take Route 25A east past route 106 until you pass the nursery.
At the next intersection where Route 25A veers to the left, turn
right into Cold Spring Road. Proceed until a road branches off half-left.
Take this road, Southwoods Road, until you see the school property
at your right. Turn left into the dirt road just before you reach
it and park.
Southampton
Take Long Island Expressway to exit 70, then head south to end
of road. Take Route 27 east to Southampton area. Princess Diner
is on Route 27.
South Shore Nature Center - Islip
Take Southern State Parkway eastinto Hecksher Parkway and take
rxit 45W. Drive west on route 27A to Bayview Avenue and turn left.
The entrance will be on your right.
Sunrise Mountain (New Jersey)
Take I-80 in New Jersey to Route 15, then follow it. Continue as
it turns into Route 206. After passing Culver Lake watch for a right
turn with a pointer to the mountain. Shortly after making that turn,
turn half left into the road leading to the destination. R
Sweet Briar Preserve
Take Sunken Meadow Parkway to Jericho Turnpike. Drive east into
Smithtown. Turn left on Edgewood Avenue, then left on Landing Avenue,
and another left on Eckerkamp Drive. Watch for parking lot sign.
Target Rock NWR.
Follow directions given for Caumsett State Park but continue straight
ahead into the refuge.
Teatown Lake Reservation (Westchester County)
Take the Taconic Parkway to Route 133 and turn west, then right
turn on Spring Valley Road.
Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary
From route 25, 25A, I-495, or Northern State Parkway, take route
106 north into Oyster Bay. Turn right on Cove Road and go two miles
till you find the cemetery parking lot at your right. Park and walk
east along Cove Road to the sanctuary entrance.
Tiffany Creek
From route 25, 25A, I-495, or Northern State Parkway, take route
106 north into Oyster Bay. Turn right on East Main street and drive
past the school. Do not turn here but look for a right turn shortly
thereafter into Sandy Hill Road. The sanctuary entrance is on the
right.
Twin Lakes Preserve
Take Wantagh Parkway to exit W5 west (Sunrise Highway). Make a
right at Old Mill Road (a short distance). Continue to Park Avenue.
Meet at the corner of Park Avenue and Old Mill Road.
Uplands Farm of The Nature Conservancy (Suffolk County)
Take route 25A east past fish hatchery. Bear right into route 108
but turn left immediately into Lawrence Hill Road. Entrance is on
the right at 0.4 mile.
Van Cortlandt Park
Take Major Deegan Expressway to Van Cortlandt South. Turn east
and left at next light. Park in Golf Course lot.
Ward-Pound Ridge Reservation
Take the Hutchinson River Parkway to I-684 and drive to exit 4
(Katonah/Cross River). Turn right and follow route 35 into Cross
River. Turn right on route 121. Park entrance is immediately on
left side. Admission Fee.
Welwyn Preserve
From I-495, exit 39N, go 5.2 miles north on Glen Cove Road. Bear
left at the fork and continue to end of road (at the firehouse).
Turn right. Turn left on Desoris Lane. Turn left on New Woods Road
and drive to the end. Turn right on Crescent Beach Road. Entrance
is on your right.
Wertheim NWR
Take Long Island Expressway to exit 67 and go south on Yaphank Road.
At the Horse Block Road intersection bear half left toward Montauk
Highway. Turn left on Montauk Highway and right on Old Beaver Road
which turns into Smith Road. Entrance is on the right.
